A destination specialist program is the fastest way to sound like you have been somewhere you have not been yet. Tourism boards build them for travel professionals, keep them current and often pair them with marketing support for graduates.

How to Choose Your First Destination Specialist Course

  • Follow your clients. Start with the place your existing or target clients ask about most, not the one you would most like to visit.
  • Favor long-haul and complex trips. Australia, Ireland and Switzerland are destinations where clients value advice on routing, timing and rail or driving.
  • Stack related programs. A Hawaii specialist who adds the island courses can answer the inter-island questions that decide a booking.
  • Check renewals. A title that lapses is worse than none on your website. Put renewal dates in your calendar.

Alpine trips mix rail, scenery and timing, exactly the details destination courses cover.

Being a destination specialist is about more than a badge. The courses teach regions, seasons, transport and the experiences a tourism board most wants to promote, which is the same vocabulary your clients will meet in their own research. Use it.

Getting the Most From a Program

Take notes as if you will write a client email from them, because you will. After each module, write three short paragraphs: when to go, how to get around, and what a first-timer must not miss. Those notes become your proposals, your newsletter items and your social posts.

Many programs give graduates extras: listings in a specialist finder, marketing assets, newsletters and invitations to training events. Some also run educational trips for their most active specialists; our sister site Travel Agent Incentives explains how those work. Read each program’s terms rather than assuming.

Names Change, So Check

Destination specialist programs are rebuilt from time to time. Visit California, for one, has announced that its California STAR training is moving to a new platform. Before you list a title on your website, confirm the program still uses that name. If you are new to the industry, start with the beginner curriculum, then add destinations.

Destination Specialist FAQ

What is a destination specialist?

A destination specialist is a travel advisor who has completed a tourism board’s training program for a country, state or region and earned the title that program awards, such as Aussie Specialist or Hawaiʻi Destination Specialist.

Can anyone sign up?

The programs are aimed at travel professionals. Tourism Australia, for example, describes the Aussie Specialist Program as training for travel agents only. Each program sets its own registration rules, so read them before you start.

Do specialist titles expire?

Some do. Switzerland Travel Expert status is renewed each year through an annual update module. Check the renewal rules of each program you complete.
